Yes, Instagram still works in 2026.
But a lot of what used to work on Instagram no longer does. If you’re a solo designer or small studio trying to attract clients, knowing what to focus on is key. Your time is too limited to waste on the wrong strategies!
Stop doing this on Instagram in 2026:
✖️ With the number of profiles on Instagram, beautiful images alone don’t stop the scroll anymore. Without explanation, process, or a clear takeaway, people admire for a few seconds and move on. Potential clients want to understand how you think, not just what you made. That’s what builds trust and shows why you’re the right designer for them.
✖️ Throwing 30 hashtags at the end of your post to reach more people won’t help anymore. Instagram now prioritizes keywords in captions, on-screen text, and alt text. If your post doesn’t clearly show who it’s for, why it matters, and the value it delivers, hashtags are just a waste of space.
✖️ Posting every day just for the sake of it easily leads to burnout, and, unless every single post is top-notch and gets saved or shared a lot, it won’t help your profile that much. Focus on fewer posts that people will want to save or share instead of filler content. You’ll probably appreciate spending less time on creating content too!
✖️ Trends without adapting them can bring reach, but they often attract the wrong audience, like other designers, instead of client leads. If it doesn’t help someone plan, decide, or trust you, it’s not helping your business.
So, what does this all mean? The shift in 2026 is clear - Instagram now rewards usefulness, clarity, and real interaction.
Here’s a simple 3-step plan for what to focus on this year:
🔥 Create content that gets saved, shared, or sent in DMs
🔥 Show your process and real decision-making
🔥 Focus on evergreen posts that keep working instead of disappearing after 24 hours
💡 Next step you can do today: Pick a finished project and make a 4-slide carousel that explains the problem, your approach, one constraint you solved, and a CTA to DM for a consult. Post it, share it in Stories, and reply to every comment and DM. Then see what happens, and let me know how it goes!
